Exterior prep, in the order it has to happen
On an Olathe exterior, painting is the last and smallest part of the job. Everything gets washed first — exterior surfaces carry pollen, dust, chalk from the old finish, and mildew on the shaded north side, and new paint over that is bonded to dirt rather than to the house. Washing happens at a pressure and angle that cleans without driving water behind siding or into a window seal, and then the house has to dry, usually at least a day and longer after a wet stretch.
Then scraping and sanding failing paint back to a sound edge, feathering those edges so no ridge telegraphs through the new coat, and dulling glossy or chalky surfaces so the finish has something to grip. Anything soft gets cut out and replaced with new primed lumber before paint — fascia behind a gutter that's been overflowing, the bottom of a door casing, window sills, the last few inches of trim above a deck. Caulk goes into vertical trim joints and around windows and doors, while the horizontal gaps under lap siding stay open, because those gaps are how the wall drains and sealing them traps water inside.
Working around the sun, and inside the house
Surface temperature drives the schedule more than the forecast does. A west-facing wall in full Kansas City afternoon sun runs far hotter than the air, and paint that sets before it can level leaves lap marks and poor adhesion. So hot elevations get worked in shade and we follow the sun around the house. Late in the season the constraint flips: overnight lows have to stay above the product's minimum and the coat has to set before dew, which is why I won't spray a full elevation at six in the evening in October to finish a day early.
Interior work here is the same discipline pointed inward. Wash the surfaces that carry film, sand and patch properly, caulk the trim joints, spot-prime the repairs so they don't flash, two finish coats standard, and a harder enamel on trim and doors that needs overnight before a clean second pass. Where a wall or ceiling has been damaged, drywall installation and finishing happens first, floated wide and primed, because paint over a shallow float shows a shadow line every evening.
