Durability first: the finish has to cure hard

Cabinets get touched more than any other painted surface in a house, so the question that matters isn't how they look on the last day — it's whether the finish is hard. Wall paint stays relatively soft by design, which is fine on a wall and a problem on a cabinet door: soft finishes print fingernails, stick to shelf liner, and block where a door meets the frame. So cabinets get a cabinet-grade enamel that cures hard, sprayed in two coats.

Adhesion is the other half. Cabinet paint that peels almost always peels for one of two reasons: it went over grease, or it went over an unsanded factory finish. Kitchen doors carry cooking grease and hand oil, especially around the range and beside the sink, and the factory coating underneath is typically a catalyzed varnish specifically engineered to resist adhesion. Degreasing and a full sanding of every face, edge, rail, and stile are what make the rest of the work mean anything. A bonding primer then grips what's left, and a stain-blocking primer goes on wherever tannin or water staining could bleed through a light color.

Cure time, reassembly, and living with a new kitchen

Doors, drawer fronts, and shelves come off and get labeled so everything goes back where it came from, hinges and hardware bagged by location. Those pieces get sprayed on racks in a contained area; boxes and face frames get sprayed in place behind full masking with doorways sealed and HVAC returns covered so overspray doesn't travel through the house.

Then the part that gets rushed elsewhere: the finish is dry to the touch quickly but keeps hardening for days afterward. Doors go back on once the finish has set, not before, and I'll tell you specifically how long to leave shelf liner out, avoid stacking dishes directly on shelves, and close doors gently. Following that for the first couple of weeks is most of what determines how the kitchen looks years later.

Before we're done, every door gets inspected in raking light for dust nibs, runs at the panel edge, and thin coverage inside the profile; hardware goes back to its labeled position; doors get adjusted for even gaps with nothing rubbing; drawers get checked for paint binding at the slides; and the counters, appliances, and floors get cleaned. The same process works on vanities, laundry cabinets, and built-ins.
